CÉSAR ALIERTA IZUEL
Chairman and CEO, Telefónica S.A.
César Alierta Izuel is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Telefónica S.A., a position he has held since July 2000. Mr. Alierta Izuel currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Altadis, as well as a member of the Board of Directors and Standing Committee of the Madrid Stock Exchange.
Since ascending to the top job at Telefónica, Mr. Alierta Izuel has instituted a corporate social responsibility program at Telefónica, including developing the Telefónica Foundation, which is focused on benefiting education through information technology.
Among his achievements in supporting and strengthening Latin America, Mr. Alierta Izuel announced in 2007 that Telefónica would be investing more than $20 billion in the region through 2010 in a diversity of programs. More recently, Telefónica, along with the Inter-American Development Bank, announced plans to cooperate on a number of innovative projects for wireless services that will help improve the quality of life for people in the region.
Alierta Izuel is also a founding member of the Americas Business Council, which aims to address important issues facing the Americas through idea-sharing platforms that serve to positively influence the next generation of leaders.
Alierta Izuel received his JD from the University of Zaragoza and his MBA from Columbia University.
