LUIS FERNANDO GALARRETA VELARDE
Congressman
Luis Fernando Galarreta Velerarde is a Peruvian Congressman and legislative president and spokesperson for his party, the National Unity Alliance. In 2006, during his first year as a legislator, the Peruvian Congress’s Ethical Committee presided which punished, for the first time, several congressmen. Mr. Galarreta, in contrast, was named by the Peruvian daily Peru21 as one of the 21 best people of that year. His life in public service began in 1989 joining the Movimiento Liberal then under the directorship of Mario Vargas Llosa. From 1990 to 1998 he studied Law and Political Science at the Universidad de San Martín de Porres, and Banking and Finance at the Institución San Ignacio de Loyola. During his university years he helped found student groups and advocated for civil liberties, and in 1991 was elected National Secretary of Universitarios de Libertad. In 1995, he managed congressional campaigns and in 1998 he was designated legal spokesperson for the National Renovation Party. From 1998 through 2000 he worked for the Ministry for the Promotion of Women and Social Development, a public agency which carries out diverse social programs on behalf of the government. In 2003 he was elected Alderman of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima where he served through 2006. He is presently a founding member of the Pro Education Civil Association which promotes the public good and the political and economic principles of a free society.
