Gen. ÓSCAR NAJARO TRUJILLO

Major General, Colombia National Police

Óscar Naranjo Trujillo has been Major General of the Colombian National Police since 2007. Mayor General Naranjo heads the national department’s fight against narcotraffic and other crime. In only two years as the directing general of his nation’s police, he has fought a pitched battle against narcotrafficking organizations leading to the capture and extradition to the U.S. of those groups’ principal leaders. Mr. Naranjo had an extensive and distinguished career in the police, where he now oversees a workforce of 140,000, before well-publicized instances of illegal wiretapping led to the forced retirement of 12 generals who outranked him. Since enrolling in the Escuela General Santender military school at age 19, Mr. Naranjo's calling has always been to lead the police. The affinity with the vocation came by way of his father, retired General Francisco José Naranjo, who directed the organization during the 1980s. Mr. Naranjo has been Director of the Judicial and Investigative Police (DIJIN), Commander of the Metropolitan Police of Cali, Director of Criminal Investigations and has held almost every kind of leadership post in the police. Last year, he received the award for “Best Business Management” from the daily economic and business publication Portafolio for his transformation of his nation’s police. The continued improvement of the force remains his principal concern.
